A trip to Castle Point - what to prepare

I had a very happy trip to Castle Point to see the lighthouse. From Wellington, we have to cross Petone, then Rimutaka Crossing, Masterton and then the castle points. Along the way, we can see a flock of sheep, horses farm and other things. It takes about 2 h and half (163.5 km) from Wellington to Castle point. Even though we could access to almost everywhere in New Zealand but I consider Castle Point the remote area so better prepared in advanced. I believe that locals are aware of such things but I also see many international visitors who can hire a car and drive themselves. If you ever plan to visit Wellington and see most of the scenic view of lighthouse in Castle Point, you may take these into consideration.
  • Beware of winery road from Wellington to Castle Point.
  • Beware of strong wind at Castle Point Stopping at Rimutaka crossing for picturesque view on winery road.
  • Spending the night at the castle point for sunset and sunrise. It is beautiful!
  • Camper van is very common in NZ and hiring it is relatively easy. Any park or inn would provide the facility for camper van, cooking and kitchen. A private car should come with sleeping gears.
  • Best option to travel out of town is to pack your own grocery and meals (no shopping or mart nearby, especially at Castle Point). Some beaches provide barbecue spots where you can cook, clean and eat your meal. Most of the parks or places where you park you car/van provide facilities such as kitchen, utensils and cutleries.
  • If you love fishing, do bring the gears, so much fish and very good spot for that!
  • If you love wind surfing, you can also do it here. Very windy beach!
