Mangrove forest of Cambodia
This month monthly topic was inspired by @HiroyukiTakisawa on quiet place. I imagined the quiet place where we can even see wildlife and enjoy the quiet of life. This month, I am going to bring you and let you take a walk with me to the biggest mangrove forest in Cambodia which is located here in Koh Kong province, the coastal area of Cambodia. It is called Peam Krosob mangrove swamp.
There are four provinces lie along the coastal area but you can see mangrove forest in two provinces, which are in Koh Kong and Kompot province.
(1) In Koh Kong which I talk about in this article is the biggest mangrove forest in Cambodia you should see. It is a unique mangrove ecosystem that has 23,750 hectares of area and there are around 10,000 people living within its borders. It is also called Peam Krasaop Wildlife Sanctuary and has been under protection of Ramsar Convention. It has nice atmosphere and located not far from Koh Kong town, about 4km away. It is best to go early in the morning, first not many people and second, you get a chance to see wildlife including monkeys too. You can rent a boat to go a bit outside into the sea. It is beautiful as you can walk up through cement trek up to the suspension bridge and look down to the forest. It is green scenery! Read more about the site here.
- Entrance ticket: 1$ for local, 2.5$ for foreigners
- Service included: a motel, boat service for spotting wildlife and go to open sea, souvenir stores
- Entertainment: good place to see fire fly at night, go fishing with the boat,
(2) In Kompot, there are smaller mangrove forest but it is nice to see as well. They are growing mangrove there to attract wildlife and bring back the ecology. People live depend mainly on fishing and more trees mean more fish too. Mangrove forest site where you can visit is called Trapeang Sangke community and Kompong Samaky community. It is about 7km away from Kompot town. It has accommodation and restaurant here. Read more about the site here.
- Entrance ticket: No
- Service included: boat service for spotting wildlife and go to open sea, restaurant, meeting room, lodge for stay
- Entertainment: good for fishing and stargazing at night
Imagine yourself walking down there, what would you like to hear or do? For me, I heard birds signing at midday. It sounds very nice!
