I perceived that elsewhere in the world, flowers are planted for decoration, show &tours and of course for business. However, Cambodia in the past, flowers are planted by family and only for Buddhism and in small scale. It is no wonder we don't have big fields and not very popular.
Me and the flower house in Battambang
- Flowers are for religious purpose: for example jasmine for the Buddha on Holy day. It is no wonder you will only see them sold at market on Buddhist Day. Popular flowers for this include Jasmine, Marigold, Lotus, Cockscomb, and Tube rose. In short, flowers are collected in April September, for the New Year celebration.
- Flowers are for event: wedding ceremony and funeral, meeting and other functions. Jasmine is used for blessing ceremony and that in the wedding. Sunflower, rose and orchid are for decoration. In recent years, people tended to use lots of flowers to decorate the wedding hall and so those flowers are imported from either Vietnam or Thailand and the popular ones are orchid and roses. Valentine's day, many people buy rose but not common as countrywide. It is mostly in Phnom Penh city and among youths.
- In the recent years with tourism trend and photography, there are more and more farms that grow flowers but more for tourism purpose - that include sunflower field, yellow flower field and other fields.
