Where to see Milky Way & stargazing in Cambodia?
Some people have a very interesting preference and spent so much time chasing it. Some spent a great deal of money for the gears like camera, motorbike, bicycle, birdwatching gears and staff like to fit their preference. I don't have much to say, except travel which I take a chance whenever I can.
I know there are many places to see beautiful sky, sunset, sunrise, northern light/southern light or stars but I want to talk a bit those spots for stargazing or milky way in Cambodia.
The video is from my friend who is into night photography for almost ten years and this video has received his permission to share.
I have seen some of the milky by naked eyes - not all but I could tell how beautiful they are. However, I don't have appropriate gears to catch them.
Where you can do stargazing?
- Preah Vihear temple - with dark sky and vast sky on the temple situated over 500meters into the sky, it is very easy to spot million stars about your head.
- Veal Thom – located in the Virachey National Park, Koh Pang commune, Veun Sai district, Rattanakiri province - very famous site among extreme adventurers because it is very deep in the jungle and accessibility is very hard. So it is worth it to camp there and look at the very dark sky.
- Bokor Mountain, Kompot: more and more international tourists are interested in the so-called galaxy Milky Way viewable from Cambodia's Bokor Mountain, according to a notification from tourism ministry - January and May, the group of stars can be seen from 2:00 and 4:00 o'clock in the morning, and from June to December it begins the glittering from 9:00 to 12:00 at night.
- Mrech Kangkeb mountain, Areng, Koh Kong, not just typical milky way. I did see comets coming down very often
- Tamoa village, Baphnom, Prey Veng – rural area with paddy field – off light are and that is in my hometown. When I was downstairs to take a shower, I did notice a wonderful milky way and it was an amazing feeling.
- Phnom Kulen, Siem Reap, another great site for the stargazing as it is so dark and no wonder it is the sweetheart of campers
- There are more places around Cambodia, especially countryside where there are not light pollution.
- I have made a list here based on my knowledge of where you can spot milky way or do stargazing while you are here.
Tips
To ensure an amazing stargazing experience, be sure to keep some important tips in mind before deciding on your preferred location!
There are some tips while going to such trip!
- Choose a spot with dark skies, one with minimal light pollution far from big cities and towns, such as from beaches, islands, mountains and lakes, ancient temples, or rural areas.
- The best time to see the stars in their full splendor is between ten days before a new moon to four days after.
- Check the weather forecast beforehand, clouds or fog will greatly ruin your chance of a perfect stargazing session.
- Bring things that will make your viewing experience comfortable, such as appropriate warm clothing, picnic mats and binoculars
