Banteay Chhmar in local name means "Narrow Fortress" or "Small Citadel" is the name of the temple located in Banteay Meanchey province, very closed to Cambodia-Thai border. It is about 3hours drive from Siem Reap town. The Google Map of the temple is here
It dates from the late 12th to the early 13thcentury. It is thought to have been built by King Jayarvarman II.
It was then rebuilt by King Jayarvarman VII as a funerary temple to dedicate to his sons and his four generals who had been killed in a battle repelling a Cham invasion in 1177. More insight about the temple can be found here.
The carvings along the walls, the statues and many other things confirmed that this is the masterpiece of King Jayarvarman VII. A long line of carving can be seen around the temple. Sadly, the main temple itself is mostly ruined. Only the Lokeshvara statue with 32 hands are still seen clearly. Lokeshvara is believed to be the mighty of all and whatever you ask, he will grant it.
