Google map of Elephant pond can be found here.

Sra Damrei or Elephant Pond might be named after the Big elephant stood faced West direction to the Pond in front of him.

Mr. J. Boulbet, the French researcher suggested that the pond was built in Kulen era (King Jayavaraman II) early of 9th Century. There are other animals built next to the elephant such as tiger, lions and bull. The temple agent told me that the pond will be renovated very soon as throughout years, it is getting shallower.

How to access there?

Even though you use Google Map but it is a good idea to hire a local guide to go with you as there are tiny roads deep in the jungle. Some video of me taking a bike to the site can be found here.

  • The site can be accessed by trekking, cycling and renting a motorbike with a guide, it costs 15$ for half day tour and 20$ for full circle.
  • It is very quiet place with the shrine as well so keep quiet and take as much fresh air as you can.
  • Before getting to the elephant pond, you will cross many small temples built during Kulen era, stop and ask your guide about it.

Nearby attractions

  • Kulen waterfall
  • Preah Ang Thom shrine
  • Uncountable temples, some document stated about 20 minor temples
  • Different rock formations, some called Peoung Thbal, Peoung Eisei
  • Local village at the back of the mountain, stay there and learn about them.
