Star Apple or Milk fruit of Cambodia

In Cambodia, we have uncountable fruits and yields at different seasons, but the majority of them yield from April - May. This time, I want to introduce one special fruit.

The common English name of this fruit is Star Apple [perhaps because of its inside looks like a star] but we call it ផ្លែទឹកដោះគោ read as Ple Teouk Dos Kou or Milk fruit because of the creamy inside of the fruit is like milk. It is sticky and very sweet. Now, it is the season of this special fruit. It is so big, 2-3 fruits can be a kilo and costs about 3-5$/kilo depends on size.

Benefits:

  • The whole tree is medical plant where you can use it root, skin and leaves to treat some intestine problem, diarrhea and stomachache.

Tree:

  • Trees are grown at home for fruits, between 10-15m tall
  • Fruits season: December-January
  • Fruits cannot be ripen like mango or other types. It has to be ripe on tree before you pick them! They will stay green forever if you pick ahead. That's why worm has chances to eat it
  • The fruit comes in two color, green and violet. The color of inside of the fruits look like the outside too. It is white if it is green and purple if it is purple. I advise to choose the green one because worm loves the purple one.
  • Among all other fruit trees, this one is still organically grown.

How to eat?

  • Normally, we cut them into two pieces and use spoon to get the meat.
  • Some seller, cut them into 4 pieces by knife and detach them from the skin - better way of eating as it is not going to stain your hand
  • Inevitable that its resin will stain you by eating this - very good for older people, yummy!
