At the moment of Covid-19 outbreak, everyone is stuck at home or at one place. Luckily, in Cambodia, it is extremely hot in April. Not sure whether this hot weather helps, low capacity of identifying the virus or the slow spread of it, we do not have state lockdown yet so people can still move around.
However, if you find it boring and feel the needs of escape and traveling during this time, you can do so! Beware of using your own vehicle or avoid crowded places. There are many isolated places that you can still pursue your travel plans:
Before I give you tips, let's just briefly do the mapping of tourism zones in Cambodia:
- Phnom Penh and surrounding areas: crowded places, Phnom Penh is the capital city and surrounding area - architecture, museums, markets, and ways of living and city life.
- Coastal areas: all beautiful beaches and islands lie in four provinces: Kep, Kompot, Sihanouk Ville and Koh Kong province. There are also mountain area in Koh Kong province where you can go trekking, hiking, do mountain biking and cycling tour. Big remaining rainforest located here, with varieties of wild animals to see. Ecotourism sites are also popular here.
- Siem Reap and surrounding areas, including Tonle Sap river: archeological parks, temples, historical buildings, way of living on the water or floating village
- Northeast area: Mekong river, mountains, tribal life, wildlife, forest.. and ecotourism sites.
These areas have its unique attractions and roles. However, there are certain places to avoid during this time. Perhaps Covid-19, teaches us one thing, to live by the nature and avoid overpopulation places. People may be more interested in living and enjoying the nature, do more travels in the rural areas and avoid the city.
However, I found some places are safe to go during this time:
- Escaping to forest for trekking or hiking: coastal areas and mountain at the southwestern and northwestern parts of Cambodia. Around Siem Reap, you can go Phnom Thbeng Meanchey and Sangrokhavoin foresty community for camping, trekking and hiking. Surely, you will meet animals more than human. It is safe to go!
- Travel to beaches and islands: this time of the year actually have beautiful scenery, calm sea and dry beaches.
- Traveling to rural areas to enjoy the nature such as the paddy fields, and small villages
- Visiting temples in Siem Reap (if you are locals). There are more than 50 temples just in Siem Reap alone and the majority of the them are quiet, not a single person. It is a perfect time for best photoshoots!
- Another tip: take up new hobby such as gardening around your house, reading, cooking, painting and learning language online..
